Great Room Beams and Wall Trim: Building a Home with Reclaimed Barn Wood Features

Great Room Beams and Wall Trim

Welcome to another story in my home-building journey, which highlights design features infused with Whatman Hardwood’s reclaimed barn wood.

Since we knew our great room would be the heart of our home — the place where mornings began and evenings wound down — we decided that’s where we’d focus our favorite design features (and most of our budget). We dreamed of rustic charm paired with warmth and light: timber beams stretching across the ceiling, wide windows trimmed in rich wood, and a fireplace that would draw everyone in during winter nights.

Beyond aesthetics, we wanted our space to mean something — to feel rooted in family and history. It was important to both my husband and me that pieces of our past found their way into the house. So, for the fireplace, the centerpiece of our great room, we turned to the places that had shaped us: our family farms.

From my side, we rescued huge, hand-hewn beams from my family’s 1850s barn — a grand old structure that had finally given way to time and weather. I still remember watching as those beams, scarred and silvered by age, were carefully lifted from the rubble. The mortise pockets and peg holes told stories of generations of labor and life. Some still had square nails buried deep in the grain, rusted but strong. Those same beams now rise proudly as the mantle and posts of our fireplace — their nicks and notches catching the glow of the firelight at night, like echoes of the past.

Pictured above is our 1850’s family barn and one of the hand-hewn beams inside supporting the structure.

My husband’s family farm had a different texture to it — rugged and wild, with a rock cliff tucked into the woods. We spent an afternoon there collecting stones, each one touched by decades of rain and sun. We carried them home, dusted and sorted them, and those very rocks are now woven into the fireplace’s stonework. The contrast of aged wood and rough stone perfectly captures the rustic, grounded feel we’d envisioned — the union of both our histories in one warm design.

The ceiling beams, too, carry echoes of old barns. Whatman Hardwoods worked their magic once again, crafting hollow recreations modeled after authentic reclaimed timbers. Their lightweight construction made installation simple, while hidden channels cleverly conceal the wiring for our ceiling fans. You’d never know by looking — they appear every bit as solid and storied as the originals.

For the trim around the doors and along the floors, we turned once more to reclaimed barn wood. Each piece, weathered and rich with patina, frames the space in rustic warmth, tying the room together with the same sense of history that runs through every beam and stone.

Now, when sunlight spills through the windows and dances across the wood grain, or when we curl up near the fire on a snowy evening, we feel surrounded by the comfort of our story — past and present woven together. Whatman Hardwoods brought our vision to life with care and craftsmanship, helping us create a space that feels not just rustic, but ours.
